Bhutan's relation with the international community during the reign of the Third King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk

 The reign of the Third King brought an end to the Policy of Isolation and finally opened its door to the outside world.

1958- Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru visit Bhutan with his daughter in September, 1958.




***Significance: 
i). The visit further strengthen the relationship between Bhutan and India.
ii). Indian government assisted Bhutan in terms of implementation of the development plans by providing financial assistance during the Three Five Year Plans (between 1961-1976).

1962- Bhutan joined Colombo Plan (First International Organization that Bhutan became a member).
***Significance:
i). Bhutan got the technical assistance from the member countries during the implementation of the development plans.


1968- Indira Gandhi visited Bhutan. She inaugurated the Thimphu-Phuentsholing Highway and laid the foundation of Indian Embassy (resident office) in Thimphu.


1969-Bhutan joined as the member of Universal Postal Union(UPU).
Significance:
i). By becoming the member, Bhutan developed its own postal stamps recognized by the world countries.
ii). Developed postal services in the country.
iii). It helped further development in communication with the countries of the world.


1970- created Department of Foreign Affairs and later upgraded to Foreign Ministry in 1972.

1971-establishe Bhutan Embassy at New Delhi, India and, V.V.Giri, President of India visited Bhutan.

1971- Bhutan became member of UNO on 21st September 1971. Bhutan supported independence of new Bangladesh State.
