1. "Jigme Namgyal made the Trongsa Poenlop the paramount power during his time in the country." Explain the statement with suitable points. (3 marks)

Ans. The power of the Trongsa Poenlop (Choetse Poenlop) became paramount during his time through his bravery and intelligence shown in the events as follows:

i). In 1854, after he came on the throne of Trongsa Poenlop, there was a power struggle or dispute for the post of Druk Desi between Thimphu and Wangdue Dzongpoen. Jigme Namgyal solved the dispute peacefully and as a result, he was given the authority to appoint the Dzongpoens in the Eastern regions as well as allowed to keep the share of annual compensation from Assam Duars.

ii). Similarly, in 1862, Jigme Namgyal again intervened and solved the issues (internal strife) between Punakha and Wangdue Phodrang Dzonpoens.

2. Jigme Namgyal lost the battle to Tsondrue Gyaltshen in 1857. Do you agree? Explain.  (2 marks)

Ans. Yes, I agree that Jigme Namgyal lost the battle to Jigme Namgyal because he had to share the power of the Eastern region with the new Jakar Poenlop (Tsondrue Gyaltshen) after the battle.

No, I don't agree that Jigme Namgyal lost the battle because he could retain the post of Trongsa Poenlop to himself and built Wangduechhoeling Palace as a symbol of his victory against Tsondrue Gyaltshen.

3. What were some of the legacies Ugyen Wangchuck followed of his father Jigme Namgyal? (3 marks)

Ans. Some of the legacies pursued by Ugyen Wangchuck of his father were:

i. Initiating diplomatic relations with the enemies through accommodation and reconciliation.

ii. Ugyen Wangchuck remained neutral when his two uncles were involved in the dispute.

iii. Appointing relatives and trusted friends on the important posts.

iv. Bringing peacefully the rebellions under control through diplomacy.

4. What is the importance of the historic document 'the Genja' signed on 17 December 1907?   (3 marks)
